Mathematics Majors

BBA/BMath students are eligible to major in any option available to Honours BMath students. Not all BBA/BMath DD students choose to select a major, and Math Majors are not an option for BBA/BCS DD students. These majors are:

Students can graduate having completed more than one major's requirements. Note that DD students have different Math Major requirements than Honours Mathematics students: i.e. do not follow your friends in other Math programs.

Out of the DD students who choose a Math Major, about half of them consider Actuarial Science (Actsci) and a third consider Statistics (Stats). Note that there is a large overlap in students that double-major in Actsci and Stats, due to the fact that there is enormous overlap between the requirements for these majors. If planned appropriately, students intending to major in Actsci can double-major with Statistics with zero additional courses. In addition, Actsci and the BBA Finance Concentration have one course overlap in their electives.

For information on professional Actuarial Science exams, see the Professional Designations page, or contact the UW Actsci Club.

About 20% of students go into Mathematical Finance, and 10% go into each of Operations Research and Combinatorics and Optimization. A very diligent student can Major in Actuarial Science, Statistics, Operations Research and Mathematical Finance.

Actuarial Science

Requirements beyond those for the DD Plan:

  • All of ACTSC 232, ACTSC 331, ACTSC 431, ACTSC 432
  • STAT 330, STAT 333, STAT 340
  • Four of ACTSC 3xx, ACTSC 4xx, STAT 431, STAT 443, BU 473
  • Major average at least 65 based on all 300- and 400-level math courses plus ACTSC 231, 232, STAT 230, STAT 231

DD students may not take ACTSC 371 or ACTSC 372 (which are required for Honours Math students). If BU 473 is taken as one of the "Four of" courses, a student can obtain an Actuarial Science Major with 52 courses. Note that students cannot take ACTSC 331 unless they have officially declared an Actsci major.

Applied Mathematics

Major Requirements beyond those for the DD Plan:

  • All of AMATH 231, AMATH 250, AMATH 261, AMATH 332, AMATH 341, AMATH 351, AMATH 353, PHY 121, PHY 122
  • Three of AMATH 4xx
  • Two of AMATH 3xx and AMATH 4xx
  • Major average at least 65 based on all 300- and 400-level math and CS courses

A student can obtain an Applied Mathematics Major with 56 courses.

Combinatorics and Optimization

Requirements beyond those for the DD Plan:

  • One of CO 330, CO 342
  • One of CO 351, CO 367
  • Three of CO 330, CO 331, CO 342, CO 351, CO 355, CO 367, CO 4xx (except CO 480)
  • All of PMATH 336
  • Two of PMATH 331, PMATH 332, CM 433 (requires CS 234), CM 472 (requires CM 271), PMATH 334, PMATH 340
  • Major average same as DD plan

A student can obtain a Combinatorics and Optimization Major with 52 courses.

Mathematical Finance

  • One of AMATH 353, PMATH 453, CO 372, CS 476
  • Major average same as DD plan

It is strongly recommended that students intending to enroll in this plan take the advanced sections of calculus MATH 147, MATH 148 and MATH 247. A student can obtain a Mathematical Finance Major with 52 courses.

Operations Research

Requirements beyond those for the DD Plan:

  • All of CM 271 or CS 370, CO 351 or CO 353, CS 234, STAT 333, STAT 340
